Oloola @50: A Remarkable Life of Service, Scholarship and Leadership

Born on March 30, 1976, in Ilara-Yewa, Ogun State, Ọba Dr. Mutiu Alani Adedimeji Oyede-Lawal’s life reflects a blend of royal heritage, academic distinction, administrative excellence, and community leadership. He hails from two prominent royal lineages: the Faningbe/Igbaka Ruling House through his father, the late Alhaji Ibraheem Dende Oyede Lawal (Alhaji Afisuru) of the Opeifa dynasty, and the Aduke Opo dynasty of the Igbaka Compound through his mother, Alhaja Silifat Lawal (Iya Talori). This dual heritage afforded him both cultural grounding and a strong foundation for personal and intellectual development.

Ọba Oyede-Lawal’s educational journey began at Roman Catholic Mission Primary School, Ilara, where he studied between 1983 and 1988. Demonstrating early academic brilliance, he excelled in the common entrance examination and was granted accelerated promotion to secondary school, bypassing his final year of primary education. He proceeded to Community High School, Ilara (1988–1993), where he obtained his Senior Secondary School Certificate.

After a brief period assisting in his father’s trading business, he gained admission in 1995 to the Federal College of Education, where he studied Computer Science and Mathematics, graduating in 1998 among the institution’s top students. Driven by an enduring passion for knowledge, he advanced to Ogun State University, Ago-Iwoye (now Olabisi Onabanjo University), as a direct entry student, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education (Accounting) in 2002 with a Second Class Upper Division, again ranking among the best in his department.

His time at university was marked not only by academic achievement but also by active student leadership. He served as Clerk of the House of the Student Representative Council (2000–2001) and was the pioneer President of the National Association of Ilara Students. His commitment to education continued with a Master’s degree in Educational Management from the University of Ibadan (2004–2007). He has since pursued lifelong learning bagging a PhD in Economics of Education in 2025.

Professionally, Ọba Oyede-Lawal built a distinguished career in education and administration. He began as the pioneer principal of Fatokun Memorial College, Ilara, before serving his National Youth Service Corps year (2003–2004) at Ebonyi State College of Education as a National Administrative Officer. His performance there earned him selection for the Ogun State Government’s Train-the-Trainer Programme at the NBC Academy in London, where he obtained certification in IT Essentials.

Upon his return, he contributed to capacity building in education, training teachers and students in computer studies at Comprehensive High School, Ayetoro (2004–2005). In December 2005, he joined Crescent University, Abeokuta, as an Administrative Officer II. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, serving in multiple capacities including College Officer in various faculties, Personnel Officer in the Registry, Assistant Registrar in Academic Planning, and ultimately Deputy Registrar in charge of Academic/Admissions, as well as Secretary to the School of Postgraduate Studies.

His administrative footprint at the university extended to active participation in key committees, including Admissions, Curriculum Planning, Budget, Staff Disciplinary, Sports, and Student Orientation Committees. He also attended numerous professional seminars and workshops, reinforcing his reputation as a diligent and forward-thinking administrator.

Beyond his formal career, Ọba Oyede-Lawal has demonstrated sustained commitment to community development and cooperative advancement. He served the Crescent Cooperative Society in several leadership roles—Secretary (2010–2012), Vice President (2012–2013), and President (2013–2017)—where he championed initiatives that strengthened economic and social welfare among members.

A respected professional, he holds memberships in several bodies, including the Nigerian Institute of Management (Associate Member), the Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators, the Institute of Corporate Administration (Fellow), and the National Association of Educational Administration and Planning.

His contributions to Ilara-Yewa are particularly notable. He was the pioneer Vice President of Itesiwaju Ilara, a socio-cultural organization uniting indigenes at home and in the diaspora. He has also been instrumental in various local development initiatives and media engagements. Through the LAMACO Scholarship Scheme, he has supported academic excellence among Ilara youths, awarding scholarships to outstanding students, including several first-class graduates.

Socially, Ọba Oyede-Lawal is an active member of the Cheerful Life Charity and Empowerment Foundation and serves as President of the Ultimate Social Club of Ilara, promoting cultural cohesion and community development.

A devout Muslim, he performed the Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia in 2012 and has been recognized for his contributions to Islamic causes, earning the title of Agbesinga Adeen of the Olosun Muslim Community. His community leadership further includes service as Secretary (2012–2016) and later Chairman (2016–2022) of the Olateju Community Development Association.

Since his ascension as the Oloola of Ilara-Yewa in 2024, Ọba Oyede-Lawal has been credited with various development initiatives, cultural revival, fostering unity, mediating disputes, and promoting peace among stakeholders in the community.

He is married and blessed with children, balancing his roles as a traditional ruler, administrator, and family man with distinction.
